The Outer Hebrides has found its way into my sketchbook.
I expected to be inspired by the big views – the turquoise seas, white beaches, dramatic skies and distant mountains. And I was.
But what surprised me was how fascinated I became by the details.
The tide transforms the landscape twice every day. At high tide the sea appears complete and smooth, concealing what lies beneath. At low tide it retreats and reveals another world: seaweed-covered boulders, shells, rock pools, tidal channels and textures that seem to belong to a different landscape altogether.
I found myself sketching constantly. Not to create finished paintings, but to explore colour, atmosphere, texture and feeling. Turquoise water. Weathered rock. Orange lichen. An endless conversation between sea and land.
I now have a series of sketchbook studies to take back to the studio. Some are memories, some an attempt to understand what I’ve been seeing and feeling in the landscape.
I think that’s what sketchbooks are really for- not recording what a place looks like, but discovering why it stays with you.
We have travelled across 10 islands in total and loved them all 🏴.
