A Trip to Isle of May to see the Puffins
May Princess
This is a trip I’ve been planning for a while, and it absolutely did not disappoint!
We took a boat from Anstruther and enjoyed a calm crossing of about an hour. We saw lots of seabirds, seals and porpoise who jumped through the water alongside our boat.Β
We sailed with the fabulous Isle of May FerryΒ on the May Princess.
As we neared the magical Isle of May we started to see little puffins bobbing on the water and an abundance of sea birds.
An Abundance of Sea Birds
Although it was the puffins we went to see specifically, we enjoyed seeing so many other sea birds such as arctic terns, gulls, fulmars, and guillemots.
Most of the birds are busy nesting and so it is important to tread carefully. The puffins nest in little burrows on the ground and some of them were very close to the path.Β
My favourite birds, apart from the puffins, were the arctic terns – famous for their long migrations – who come to Isle of May to nest.Β
Inspiration for my Art
Studying wildlife in the natural habitat and up close is important to be able to convey their character on the canvas.
I therefore made sure I took time to really study these fascinating animals and observe their behaviours. This enables me to capture their unique personalities back in the studio.
I have since made a number of puffin-inspired works that you can see in my website shop
